INTRODUCTION

SLAB – This is a structure which is formed vertically to support its load and other similar type of load. The slab must considerable and stable to bear the dead and its load. To ensure stability, the floor needs sufficient vertical supports to address the possible of limbering when it is loaded by a big load.

Slab are plates element forming floors and roofs in buildings which normally carry uniformly distributed load. Slabs may be simply supported or continuous over one or more supports and are classified according to the method of support as follows:

  1. Spanning one way between beams or walls
  2. Spanning two ways between the support beams or walls
  3. Flat slab carried on columns and edge beams or walls with no interior beams

Slab may be solid of uniform thickness or ribbed with ribs running in one or two directions. Slab with varying depth are generally not used. Stairs with various support conditions form a special case of sloping slap.

FUNCTIONS OF SLABS

  1. To prepare a plain surface
  2. To support loads
  3. Operate as a sound fire and heat insulator or resistance
  4. The space between the floor and ceiling can be used to placed building equipment and materials

TYPES OF SLABS

There are various types of slabs and the particular type to be preferred may depend on the following:

  1. The span of the slab
  2. The use of the slab
  3. The load to be carried
  4. Architectural aesthetic

The following are the various types of slabs that we have.

  1. Solid slab (Cantilever slab, Simply supported slab, Continuous and two-ways slab)
  2. Ribbed slab
  3. Flat slab (although solid but in different construction)
  4. Waffle slab (with beams or mushroom waffle)
